چکیده

It seems to be cross-linguistically fairly common for morphology added to DPs that are already inflected for Case to interact in different ways with structural and inherent case morphology. Such morphology is often required to replace structural case morphemes, while DPs with inherent case either cannot receive the morphology at all or simply add it on top of the existing inherent case morpheme. The Japanese Topic marker wa offers one instance of this. It obligatorily replaces Nominative or Accusative case, but occurs freely after other case morphemes and postpositions: (1) a. Taroo-(*ga/o)-wa Taroo NOM/ACC TOP b. Taroo-(ni/ kara)-wa Taroo DAT from TOP Russian Genitive of Negation behaves in an arguably similar way. Genitive of negation replaces structural case morphology (Nominative, Accusative) on the DPs to which it is applied, while it cannot affect DPs with inherent case (Pesetsky 1982, Babyonyshev et al 2001, Partee and Borschev 2006):

On Korean “ Case Stacking ” : The varied functions of the particles ka and lul ∗

Korean exhibits a phenomenon that has been dubbed case stacking, in which the “nominative” particle ka is optionally suffixed to the subject in addition to the dative particle eykey. Numerous authors have claimed that “stacked” ka represents the realization of structural nominative case assigned to subject position, independent of inherent dative case. Under this view, ka-stacking provides prim...

Partitive Case and Aspect

Current theories make a distinction between two types of case, STRUCTURAL case and INHERENT (or LEXICAL) case (Chomsky 1981), similar to the older distinction between GRAMMATICAL and SEMANTIC case (Kuryłowicz 1964).1 Structural case is assumed to be assigned at S-structure in a purely configurational way, whereas inherent case is assigned at D-structure in possible dependence on the governing p...

Phases beyond

It is agued that there is crosslinguistic variation regarding what counts as a phase in the traditional Noun Prase (TNP) which tracks independent crosslinguistic variation regarding the categorial status of the TNP assumed under the DP/NP parameter, on which languages without articles lack DP. In particular, it is argued that DP is a phase in DP languages, and NP is a phase in NP languages. How...

Data, information, and knowledge amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

Converting data into information, knowledge, and then wisdom is the most onerous part of science, especially biological sciences. More attention must be paid to the difficulty inherent in this process amid the emergence and the spread of a novel virus, since neglecting the distinction between these epistemic categories can lead to incomplete and even incorrect identification of the causes and t...

Stacking interactions and intercalative DNA binding.

The DNA-binding properties of many ligands can be rationalized on the basis of their structural and electronic complementarity with the functional groups present in the minor and major grooves of particular DNA sequences. Specific hydrogen bonding patterns are particularly useful for the purpose of sequence recognition. Less obvious, however, is the influence of base composition on the conforma...
